Salerno is the Amalfi Coast’s best kept secret.
Situated at the southern tip of one of the world’s most celebrated coastlines, Salerno is a wonderful base for an Amalfi Coast vacation.
The city has a spectacular historic center, anchored by Il Duomo San Matteo, built in 1085. Visitors can wander through cobblestoned, medieval streets, enjoying the stunning architecture, as they wind their way down to the loveliest oceanfront promenade on the entire Amalfi Coast. The wide, tree lined boulevard is a beautiful place to take a leisurely stroll or to sit and watch the world go by. Meanwhile from up on the hill, Arechi castle watches over the town and all her people, as it has done since the 7th century. The castle is well worth a visit, and the panoramic views from its walls are sensational.
The local cuisine is wonderful, and Salerno offers a multitude of dining options (at a fraction of the price of nearby Positano!) Everyone is out in the evenings, strolling, eating, enjoying a glass of wine, which makes it easy to spot where the locals eat and go eat there too!
One of the great things about staying in this beautiful town is that you are close to everything you will ever want to do on the Amalfi Coast, and yet far away from the tourist crush at the other end of the coast. You can stroll freely without getting caught up in bus loads of visitors, you can take photos without people getting in the way, and you are not assaulted by T-shirt shops and Made-In-China souvenirs.
If you are planning an Amalfi Coast vacation consider staying in Salerno.
The best part of Salerno to stay in is the historic center. The apartments at Casa Vacanze Duomo are ideally located in the heart of the historic center of town, one minute’s walk from the Duomo. The apartments are part of a 17th century palazzo that while retaining it’s character and charm, has been fully renovated and modernized inside. The interiors are beautiful and fully appointed.
From the apartments you can walk everywhere. The location is superb!
